An introduction to Market Research: An intern's view

"Having studied market research at university as a part of my business management degree, I really wanted to get a taste for what it would be like in the real working world, so taking this opportunity from Research by Design was perfect for me.

I was apprehensive about taking my first steps into the world that is market research, but after a few hours I was excited to delve deeper and experience everything it has to offer. It was nerve-racking walking into a room full of professionals but I soon realised everyone was more than happy to help and were very welcoming. After learning some of the methods behind market research I was soon encouraged to help out on live projects, whilst continuing my learning by looking at past projects. Both were extremely useful and it was nice that the team put the trust in me to help assist them.

I covered a range of things over the course of my placement, ranging from scripting surveys to conducting telephones interviews. While both seem like fairly simple tasks I soon realised the work and effort that needs to go into them to reach the high standards needed when working with clients. I got to see how a database was made and how data is analysed. I witnessed many different projects in my short stay with Research by Design, covering many different sectors. Each one I looked at or participated in a different process of carrying out market research. The best thing for me was witnessing from a first-hand perspective all the different processes that go into a market research project, and I really learnt a lot from this which I feel will help me in my final year of university and beyond.

Looking back on my time with Research by Design I realised how much I’ve learnt in such a small amount of time and I feel it has given me a great platform for the future."
